The double motion of censure against the French Government fails

The National Assembly of France has rejected this Monday a motion of censure against the government Gallic presented by the left-wing coalition New Popular Ecologist and Social Union (Nupes), led by La Francia Insumisa. This also had the support of the extreme right-wing National Association of Marine Le Pen.

The motion of censure was presented after the prime minister, Elizabeth Borneresorted last week to a constitutional mechanism to give the ‘green light’ to the first part of the 2023 state budget. The motion has finally obtained 239 votes in favor, leaving 50 of the 289 necessary for it to go ahead. In fact, from Nupes they have warned that after this vote, both the country’s president, Emmanuel Macronlike Borne, are “weaker than ever.”

Le Pen had announced in the French Parliament that she would vote in favor of the motion of censure before this, a moment that she also took advantage of to accuse the prime minister of organizing a sort of “game of thrones” within the Executive. Given this, Borne has responded by ironically pointing to the possibility that Le Pen and the extreme left could govern together.

This is the first time that a French government has faced three motions of censure in one day. Both the National Association and Nupes have presented voting paths that, however, since their inception had little chance of succeeding due to the refusal of support from the Republicans. Starting at 9:30 p.m., a third motion on the Social Security budget presented by the socialist Jérôme Guedj is scheduled.

The parliamentary pulse arrives in full wave of social mobilizations against the president and his administrationmainly due to the strikes at the refineries and the protests that demand, among other actions, salary increases that compensate for the increase in prices in this last year.

With Macron in the Elysee, the Government already resorted to the resource of article 49.3 of the Constitution – which allows a bill to be approved without a vote – at the beginning of 2020, to carry out a controversial pension reform that was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Covid-19. If you pass the current procedure, the budget plan will go directly to the Senate.
