MADRID, Feb. 2 (.) –
The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, has publicly reappeared this Wednesday with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, during the celebration of the Lunar New Year, called Seollal and which marks the first day of the Korean lunar calendar.
This is Ri’s first public appearance since last September, when the two visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the bodies of the late Kil Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, former leaders of North Korea, lie.
Kim and Ri, along with several senior officials, attended the ceremony at the Mansudae Art Theater in Pyongyang, the country’s capital, as confirmed by the North Korean state news agency KCNA.
Kim’s aunt, Kim Kyong Hui, has also attended the event, her first public appearance for at least two years. Kim Kyong Hui has kept a low profile since her husband, Jang Song Thaek, was executed in late 2013 for plotting to overthrow the regime. Her absence has sparked numerous rumors about her state of health.
According to the aforementioned agency, the North Korean leader has “warmly congratulated the audience and the artists on Lunar New Year’s Day, acknowledging the enthusiastic cheers.”
