Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his statements about Kyiv’s candidacy for NATO membership, reports Anadl.
“Erdogan said today that he really sees that Ukraine is getting closer to membership in the Alliance. This means a lot. Thank you!”, Zelensky said in a video message on Telegram late last night on his return to Ukraine from the NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius.
Zelenski also thanked Erdogan for Turkey’s principled defense of security in the Black Sea, saying Turkiye was doing “historic things for everyone.”
Evaluating the results of the NATO summit, Zelensky said that Ukraine had formed a security foundation on its way to NATO membership for the first time since breaking away from the Soviet Union in 1991.
The Ukrainian president said he and his delegation were returning from the NATO summit with a good reinforcement of weapons, including air defenses, missiles, armored vehicles and artillery, adding that the security guarantees they received were concrete and confirmed by the G-7 group. .
“We have never had such a security basis before, and this is the G-7 level. On this basis, we will build a new, legally binding architecture of bilateral security agreements with the most powerful countries,” said Zelenski.
He went on to say that they removed all doubts or ambiguities about whether Ukraine will be in NATO.
“Never before have the words ‘you are equal among equals’ sounded so true and meaningful for Ukraine. Now everyone understands that this is a fact. Equal among equals. And we will certainly confirm that fact with our victory. And with our approach to NATO. Earlier they the Russian rulers wanted to have their own fence in front of NATO’s door. We have left this Russian ambition on the margins of European history,” said Zelenski.
He also thanked other NATO members for their positions and military support to Ukraine.
