Yolanda Díaz: “I don’t want to be to the left of the PSOE, I give the PSOE that little corner”

The Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, made an authentic declaration of intent on Thursday about the space that her “country project” wants to occupy. After the president of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, defended a few months ago the benefits of having a strong project to the left of the socialists, Díaz has detached himself from this scenario drawn by the president and has insisted that his project, still pending define, aims to be transversal and not be relegated to a specific and narrow spectrum.

In an interview in The Radiocable Coffee Maker The vice president has been asked if the objective of her project is to “unite the left of the PSOE”: “I don’t like being placed to the left of the PSOE, it is not true and I also work for all citizens. I don’t want to be to the left of the PSOE, I give the PSOE that little corner. I do not work from the left of the left, the policies that I deploy and what seduces me is to think of a large country, “he replied.

Díaz has warned on several occasions that he will not work with the political spaces defined by the socialists: “This alleged gift that they wanted to give us, the ‘you stay on the extreme left’, we are not going to accept it; I work for the people, I like to work from specific positions, and there we find many and many, “he defended.

The vice president has admitted feeling “pressured” by the expectations that her figure arouses, but also “excited” by the process of “active listening” of civil society that she herself is going to start next year, after Christmas.

“I am willing not to speak myself, but for Spanish society to speak, with an eye toward imagining our country in 10 years, and I am going to do it after Christmas, next year. I will visit my country so that Spanish citizens can speak. I’m going to listen a lot and after listening a lot we will see what to do, “he has advanced.

He has also defended again that political parties and acronyms do not have to be the center of politics and of all debates: “We must deconstruct Machiavelli, who defined a very hierarchical power. Parties are a very small thing in our country, and today they are an obstacle. Social constructions belong to the people and should be different, “he said, although before he thanked the” enormous work “that is done by political organizations.

The vice president recalled in the interview the worst moments of the coronavirus pandemic, in 2020, and the debates that were held within the Government in the first months. In this sense, it has revealed that already at the beginning of March the Ministry of Labor and its team had already prepared the so-called protection ERTEs, which were later deployed to prevent a permanent destruction of employment that would have been historic.

“On February 15, 2020, I summoned my team because of what I was seeing in Italy. On March 4, I presented an enormously controversial guide both in the Government and abroad (the guide for the protection of workers against covid-19, a text by which Díaz was described as “alarmist”). When we had this guide ready, we had already planned some measures, such as the ERTE for protection. If we had not had the ERTE, we would have reached the (unemployment) figures that Mariano Rajoy had. “, has defended.
