The National Cryptologic Center (CCN) has been responsible for detecting espionage on the mobile phones of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, carried out with the Pegasus program. It is worth asking, however, what functions does this body dependent on the National Intelligence Center (CNI) have?
Its main task is to help improve Spanish cybersecurity, act “quickly and efficiently” against cyber attacks and cyber threatsbut it also coordinates the different existing centers of similar operations at the state public level, as detailed on its website.
Its competence, therefore, goes through the management of cyber incidents that affect any public body or company and, in the case of “critical operators” in the public sector, these will be managed by the CCN-CERT in coordination with the Security Technological Center (CNPIC).
The CCN is firmly committed to promoting “a safer and more reliable cyberspace”with the preservation of classified and sensitive information, “defending the Spanish Technological Heritage, training expert personnel, applying security policies and procedures and using and developing the most appropriate technologies for this purpose”.
