Wave of hotel hacks to scam Booking users through their app

Japan, early September. Adrián, a Spanish tourist, is sightseeing visiting several destinations in the country when he receives a message through the official Booking app. He sends him to the Kyoto hotel where he will stay three days later. The accommodation informed him of an error in the reservation. “It indicated that there had been a problem with my credit card and that I should please refer to an email that had been sent to me to proceed with the payment, otherwise my reservation would be cancelled,” says Adrián.

Many may not need more to know how this story ends. Adrián was a victim of phishing. He has contacted elDiario.es to warn that it is easy for this campaign to catch him off guard. “I am a person who works in the technology sector, so I consider myself knowledgeable about these tricks. I have also received various training on the subject so I never thought it would happen to me,” he explains: “I was caught traveling without good access to the internet or phone, so I proceeded to do what I was told.”
