United We Can accuses Moreno’s PP of “not standing up to the extreme right” and calls on Andalusian civil society to unite

“The Andalusian PP is not capable of standing up to the extreme right”, said Toni Valero, general coordinator of IU in Andalusia. Valero, at the party of the PCA in Córdoba, gave a lucid speech in which he urged “getting the exceptionality of the moment into your head.” Without that insight, he said, alliances will fall short “for the enemy in front of us.” In this work to generate alliances and complicity, Valero affirmed that the key was to “appeal to the interests of the working class, whether on the left, right or mid-pensioners.” “Without those material interests of the social majority, [el frente amplio] it will not be useful to the people,” he stressed.

Valero put his finger on the sore spot: the abstention of the left in Andalusia, which led to the victory of the right in December 2018. “The context we have today demands a broad front: the serious resignation that occurs in the electorate of the left. What happens is that the progressive part is not rising. Citizen involvement has decreased. To get someone off the couch you have to raise them up with something that excites them. It is key to excite with unity. Unity is to end the resignation. How to combat this disaffection among people on the left? We must not go into the story that underpins disaffection by charging all political organizations. We are not the same. We are ordinary people, from the street. To break disaffection, we must put organizations at the service of the people”.

“Building a hope is not selling a donkey, it is giving someone something to fight for, and that is the most sacred thing in politics, giving someone something to fight for,” Valero added. The Andalusian coordinator of IU contributed more ideas: “The broad front is not a candidacy, although it is there. It is a political process. We will see what role the candidacy can play. There are many projects that we enter to conjure ourselves for something together. Participation generates something different from a sum of acronyms and generates a mobilization both internal and external to the process”.

a crossroads

The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, elaborated on Valero’s ideas: “We are at a crossroads of life. Whether we are going to participate in a more democratic process or ecofascism. The challenge has to move us. It is a challenge that we need to face successfully “, he claimed. “You have to put working families first,” he added. Garzón gave an example of what happens with health. “We are citizens with rights. If we go private, our condition in democracy changes, from citizens to clients. This has those responsible, who open the door to a series of companies and this is happening in Andalusia,” he said. “The economy is possible only because we have a natural environment, which is being depleted,” Garzón stressed.

United We Can is in the process of confluence with More Country Andalusia – whose assembly endorsed the progress this Saturday – and Equo for the next regional elections. “People are waiting to join a process that excites – Garzón affirmed – you have all the support and we are going to learn a lot from the Andalusian process”.

The Podemos coordinator, Martina Velarde, also urged civil society to unite and stand up to the extreme right in Andalusia. “Moreno has been threatening us with elections for two years, the working classes have to unite. They are already opening the way to that alliance with the extreme right. They want to do the same as in Castilla y León. We have been taking steps backwards for three years,” Velarde said. . “We are entering a political cycle: we need good foundations or we are lame. Andalusia has to play its historical role,” Valero stressed.
