MADRID, 18 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
Ukraine has completed the questionnaire that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, handed out last week to the Ukrainian President, Volodimir Zelensky, for Ukraine to receive the status of a candidate to join the European Union.
This was announced this Sunday by Zelensky’s diplomatic adviser and head of European integration, Igor Zhovkva, who has detailed that in June there will be a meeting of the European Council where it will be decided whether to approve the status of a candidate for membership of the Union of Ukraine , according to the Unian agency.
At this meeting, where the leaders of all the member states will be present, it will be confirmed whether Ukraine meets the criteria for membership of the Union, known as the Copenhagen criteria, which set a series of conditions on democracy, economy and politics for the countries who want to join the EU.
“There is no EU member state that opposes Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. The position of the countries differs only on the speed of the procedure that Ukraine must go through before becoming a member,” Zhovkva explained. in statements collected by the Ukrinform agency.
In addition, the diplomatic advisor has assured that Ukraine has held talks with several of the countries that do not defend a rapid membership procedure, although “the majority” of States do support this entry model.
On the other hand, “although not all members are ready for the decision,” Zhovkva said last Monday that Ukraine’s entry into the Union will take place “in the coming years.”
