Tunisia.. Saeed discusses irregular immigration with the Italian Minister of Interior

Tunisia / Alaa Hamoudi / Anatolia

Tunisian President Kais Saied discussed, on Monday, with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Biantidossi, irregular migration and strengthening bilateral cooperation in several files.

This came during a meeting that brought them together at the Carthage Palace, as part of an unannounced visit by Biantidossi to Tunisia, according to a statement published by the Tunisian presidency on its Facebook page.

The statement quoted Saeed as saying, “Addressing the causes leading to irregular migration is the most effective way to put an end to it. Tunisia, in turn, suffers from this tragedy, and the solution must be collective, according to a new approach.”

According to the statement, “Saeed proposed to his Italian counterpart, through Piantedossi, to hold an urgent international meeting at the level of heads of state and government, or at the level of interior ministers, in which all concerned countries, including countries from which migrants flow, would participate.”

Saeed pointed out, “The necessity of adopting a mechanism that eliminates the causes of irregular migration, and not only dealing with the results and effects,” according to the same source.

He pointed out that “the number of immigration victims doubles due to the presence of criminal networks that take advantage of the difficult conditions of migrants and deliberately traffic them by sea.”

For his part, Piantidossi stressed, according to a video clip broadcast by the Tunisian presidency, “the need to focus on a more comprehensive practical approach that is not limited to the security dimension in dealing with the phenomenon of irregular migration.”

The Italian minister pointed out that “work must focus on examining all the causes that exacerbate this phenomenon.”

“We have laid the foundations for strengthening bilateral cooperation in several files with a security dimension, and for combating irregular migration,” Piantedosi added.

In recent months, the pace of irregular migration to Europe via Tunisia has escalated, due to the repercussions of the economic and political crises experienced by the countries of the region, which prompted them to call on the international community to take decisive measures to curb this phenomenon.
