Little more than a year Toni Cantó has been in the position that Díaz Ayuso created for him in the Community of Madrid. The former deputy of UPyD, Ciudadanos and former candidate for the PP has announced this Thursday that he is leaving the direction of the Spanish Office to “start a new professional project soon”. Cantó communicated her decision after eight in the afternoon, through her Twitter account, taking advantage of the informative effervescence caused by the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England.

“It has been an unforgettable experience that I will remember with pride,” says Cantó, despite the fact that his time at the Spanish Office has been strewn with controversy and doubts about his functions since June 2021, when the Madrid president appointed him director of an organ of new creation that the opposition described as “chiringuito ad hoc“.
Cantó joined the PP in Madrid to appear on the lists of the regional elections of May 2021 as a direct bet from Genoa, which imposed its name on Ayuso in position number five. The maneuver of the Casado leadership not only eroded the relationship with the Madrid president, but it went wrong: Cantó was not registered in the region at the time of formalizing his candidacy and a judge ended up excluding him from the electoral list.
Ayuso then said that he would count on him in some other way and in the last days of June he announced the birth of the Spanish Office, a newly created department dependent on the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport, which Cantó would direct. A position for which he would charge, at least, 75,085 euros gross per year. The appointment was highly questioned even among the popular ranks.
Cantó and Ayuso then defended themselves by criticizing the “virulence the left”. “I see to the left of the 23 ministries, the independence embassies, the historic electricity prices or the Falcon, being scandalized by an office promoting industry and the economic and cultural potential of Spanish,” said Ayuso.
The body would be dedicated to “the promotion of the Community of Madrid as the European capital of Spanish, dialogue with institutions to promote economic opportunities for Spanish and active collaboration with entities.” But in the little more than twelve months that he has endured in office, Cantó has been known more controversies than tasks.
