The worst bus accident in almost ten years in Pakistan leaves 41 dead

The authorities of Pakistan raised to 41 the dead this Sunday a bus fall down a ravine and later caught fire in the southern province of Balochistan, an event that also left three injured and has become the worst accident of its kind in almost a decade in the country.

“One wounded man died from his wounds, so the number of deaths rises to 41 in addition to 3 wounded,” the deputy commissioner of the city of Bela, Hamza Ajum, told Agencia Efe.

The source said the bus was traveling from the eastern city of Quetta to southern Karachi with 44 passengers on boardwhen it crashed into a guardrail after taking a sharp turn, it fell face down into a 15-meter ravine and caught fire.

The incident took place around 3:30 a.m. local time. (10:30 a.m. Saturday) in the Lasbela district, according to the local official, who explained that the fire broke out because the bus was carrying diesel on its roof. When falling off the cliff, the fuel ignited and flames engulfed the vehicle.

“Almost all the bodies are burned to such an extent that they cannot be identified,” Anjum said, so they have been flown to Karachi for DNA testing while the injured received treatment in the city of Lasbella. The source pointed out that the rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of visibility.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his “deep regret and sorrow over the bus accident” and ordered “to provide all possible medical assistance to the injured,” his office said in a statement.

This Saturday is the most serious bus accident in Pakistan since, in January 2015, 62 people died in the collision of a bus full of passengers with a tanker truck carrying gasoline in the south of the country.

pakistan has one of the highest traffic accident rates of the world due to the terrible state of its roads, to the deficiencies of the vehicles and to the fact that public transport tends to circulate overloaded with passengers. According to data from the Pakistani government, around 30,000 people die annually in traffic accidents in the country.
