MADRID, Feb. 13 (.) –
The United States denied this Saturday that it was carrying out operations with a submarine in Russian territorial waters after Moscow claimed to have detected a Virgina-class vessel near the island of Urup, in the Kuril Islands archipelago.
“There is no truth to the Russian claims of our operations in their territorial waters. I will not comment further on the precise location of our submarines,” US Indo-Pacific Command spokesman Kyle Raines said, according to CNBC.
Raines has assured that the US military operates “safely in international waters.”
This Saturday the Russian Ministry of Defense summoned the US military attaché after detecting a US submarine in its waters.
The crew of the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate discovered the submarine and ordered it to surface immediately, an order that was ignored, according to the Russian agency TASS.
This incident has taken place in the middle of a moment of maximum tension between Russia and NATO due to the accumulation of Russian forces on the border with Ukraine, a possible prelude to an invasion, according to the Atlantic Alliance.
The Kremlin categorically denies any intention to carry out an invasion of Ukraine.
