The UN demands energy saving measures from all countries

The United Nations Organization (UN) has requested that all States take urgent measures to save energy, especially the developed ones. The secretary general, Antonio Guterres, has emphasized the use of heating and air conditioning. “Conserving energy, promoting public transport and nature-based solutions is essential,” she said.

Guterres has presented this Tuesday a report with proposals for the short, medium and long term that have already begun to be implemented or discussed in many places. Regarding the regulation of temperatures, the document also recommends improving the insulation of buildings.

Transport is another area in which the UN believes that countries must act. The report advocates a reduction in speed limits and in the number of business trips as long as there are other alternatives. In addition, encouraging public transport and giving priority to trains over planes can also help reduce energy costs.

50% of global energy consumption in 2021 was for the use of heating, Guterres recalled. Air conditioners, for their part, could reduce their consumption by up to 10% with one degree of difference, according to the UN document.

The report claims government support to households in more vulnerable situations, with facilities to access energy or compensation for high prices. In the medium and long term, the UN seeks to promote better electrical interconnections, the use of renewable energy and measures aimed at promoting a green economy.
