Live: Government Crisis in Peru

MADRID, Dec. 8 (.) –

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has asked this Thursday to “guarantee the rule of law” in Peru and avoid an increase in tension after the arrest of the now former president Pedro Castillo after being dismissed by Congress.

Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, has thus indicated that the UN has urged the parties involved to “remain calm”, as indicated in a statement.

Thus, he has conveyed Guterres’s concern about the political situation in the country and has criticized “any attempt to undermine the democratic order.”

Peru’s congress ousted Castillo by an overwhelming majority on Wednesday in a session that took place despite the fact that the president had dissolved parliament a few hours earlier.
