The omicron is already present in 86 countries around the world

MADRID, Dec. 18 (.) –

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported this Saturday that the omicron variant of the coronavirus has already been detected in 89 countries and has warned that it continues to expand rapidly.

Confirmed omicron cases double every 36 and 72 hours in countries where it is already present, according to the WHO report, which indicates that the variant has a “substantial growth advantage” over the hitherto dominant delta variant .

For this reason it is expected that the omicron will soon overtake the delta and become the dominant one. In any case, the WHO warns that it is not known whether the rapid growth of omicron is due to greater transmissibility, a greater ability to infect vaccinated people or a combination of both.

“The data we have on the clinical severity of omicron remains limited. More data is needed to understand the severity profile and how vaccination and prior immunity affect it,” the WHO explained in a technical document.

“Hospitalizations in the UK and South Africa continue to rise and given the rapid increase in cases, many healthcare systems may soon be overwhelmed,” he warned.
