Guadalajara (176), Burgos (164) and Soria (119), the provinces with the most municipalities with less than 100 inhabitants.
MADRID, May 1. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The number of municipalities with less than 100 inhabitants has increased by more than 47% in the last 20 years, so that in 2021 there were 1,379 towns with that population, for the 934 municipalities that had less than 100 inhabitants in the year 2001, according to historical evolution data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
This body has made public this month the latest data for the year 2021, and, on its website, it makes a series of historical evolutions that have to do, among other things, with the number of municipalities according to their population.
In this way, with regard to the number of towns with less than one hundred inhabitants, the historical series shows growth in the last two decades, which has only been weighed down in the years 2006, 2010 and 2019.
As can be deduced from these official data from the National Institute of Statistics, Guadalajara (176), Burgos (164) and Soria (119) are the provinces with the most municipalities with less than one hundred inhabitants in 2021, following the trend of the last 20 years, where these three regions have remained the ones with the most towns of this type.
On the contrary, there are twenty provinces that in the year 2021 did not have any municipality with 100 inhabitants or less. These regions are Asturias, Álava, the Balearic Islands, Vizcaya, Cádiz, Córdoba, La Coruña, Guipúzcoa, Granada, Jaén, Lugo, Málaga, Murcia, Ourense, Las Palmas, Pontevedra, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Seville, Ceuta and Melilla.
VILLAGES WITH LESS THAN 5,000 INHABITANTS DECREASE
In this historical evolution, the INE also breaks down the data by municipalities with 100 to 5,000 inhabitants, which, in this case, decreases the number of this type of town in the last 20 years. Specifically, there are 9% fewer municipalities with 101 to 500 inhabitants in recent decades, going from 2,883 in 2001 to 2,614 today.
The number of municipalities with a population between 501 and 1,000 inhabitants decreased by 10.9% in the last 20 years, going from 1,127 in 2001 to 1,004 in the last INE record, in 2021.
The number of municipalities from 1,001 to 2,000 inhabitants (12.7%), the number of towns from 2,001 to 3,000 inhabitants (8.8%) and the number of municipalities from 3,001 to 5,000 inhabitants (1, 8%).
