The leaders of Chavismo devastate the Amazon in the face of the silence of the ‘green’ left

6% of the Amazon, the largest tropical forest in the world, belongs to Venezuela. An extension of about 400,000 kilometers of Amazon rainforest ‘wonderful’ (declared one of the seven wonders of the world in 2011) that is being devastated by illegal mining that the Chavista regime has promoted during the last 20 years.

The Amazon region of Venezuela, which extends south of the Orinoco River, is home to 29 protected areas: 8 national parks, 19 natural monuments and 2 biosphere reserves. An incalculable natural wealth that has not been enough to stop the cravings of the chavista narco-state to find new sources of money.

The governments of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro have implemented different programs to exploit the region’s gold, diamond and coltan reserves, without caring about the impact that their people and the environment would have. The result has been catastrophic: the ecocide of the Venezuelan Amazon. A dark side of paradise – alluding to the title of the conference – about which Cristina Burellifounder of SOS Orinocotries to shed light since 2018.

criminal mining policy

As reported this Tuesday, during the presentation at Casa de América, when rumors reached him that there was illegal mining in the Canaima National Park, the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Amazon region of Venezuela, he began to investigate. What was found: “A lot of fear and little information”.

“In a totalitarian country like this it is very difficult to report“, he pointed out, “it is dangerous because you don’t know where you might end up“. That is the fundamental reason why he decided to start the NGO and work with anonymous contributorsonce UNESCO confirmed that it would accept the reports made by the experts if “they were technical and well done”.

Cristina Burelli, during the conference at Casa de América (Madrid).

“The regimen of Maduro has deleted all the information“, he explains, so SOS Orinoco is dedicated to georeference mining operations with satellite images. What they have found is that they are not only found in the Mining Arc announced in 2016 and that it has an area of 110,000 square kilometers -equivalent to Portugal- but it is also extending south of the Orinoco.

Maduro -before Chávez- and his henchmen are enriching themselves at the expense of the Amazon and the indigenous peoples, undertaking a criminal and uncontrolled mining policy that “benefits people on many levels”but especially to “the hierarchs of chavismo”. Burelli doesn’t mind clothes and points directly at the Venezuelan president and Delcy Rodríguez.

business consequences

The most obvious effect of mining activity in the Venezuelan Amazon jungle is the ecosystem degradation. There is a process of mercury poisoning used on farms. Its use – by the way – “is also illegal,” Burelli points out. It affects the environment but also the indigenous communities, as has happened with the Pemón people.

But it is that it has also triggered a health crisis due to the resurgence of diseases such as malaria. “Venezuela has gone from being an example in its eradication to being the country with the most cases in Latin America,” warns the founder of SOS Orinoco. To a great extent, it is due tothe pools of the gold mines, where the mosquito breeds that infects people.

Within the framework of this illicit business, one would also have to speak of loss of sovereignty of the population and of the violation of human and indigenous rights. The Maduro regime has ceded land in southern Venezuela to non-state transnational actors and is in a struggle with the Pemón people for control of their ancestral lands. Nowadays, the FARC controls large areas with the approval of the Bolivarian National Guard. Gold is behind everything.
