The fourth square as a balm
Atlético seeks to forget its European elimination against Espanyol and take advantage of the tie between Betis and Real Sociedad to settle in ‘Champions’
MADRID, 16 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
Atlético de Madrid is looking this Sunday at the Wanda Metropolitano (4:15 p.m./Movistar LaLiga), on the thirty-second day of LaLiga Santander, to forget its bitter European elimination against Manchester City and settle in the Champions League positions against RCD Espanyol , taking advantage of the tie between their immediate pursuers, Real Betis and Real Sociedad.
The 0-0 last Wednesday at the rojiblanco coliseum, after the 1-0 first leg at the Etihad Stadium, dropped Diego Pablo Simeone’s men from the ‘Champions’, between brawls on and off the field, and now only It remains to fight to be present in the next edition of the tournament, which happens, at least, to guarantee fourth place in the league.
Precisely, that is the place they currently occupy with 57 points, three behind Sevilla FC and with the same ones with which Real Betis expects any mattress setback to sneak into the privileged zone. With seven games to go, they cannot afford to fail if they want to be in the top competition on the Old Continent next season.
The final stretch of the ’14 finals’ of the ‘Cholo’ arrives and, with the Verdiblancos and Real Sociedad (55) hot on their heels, the team needs to regain confidence and, above all, their aim. The rojiblancos have been kept to zero in their last three games, both against the ‘citizens’ and in the defeat against RCD Mallorca (1-0).
A goal from Muriqi put an end to a series of six wins in a row in the domestic competition, which began after the surprise defeat against Levante at home, and confirmed their difficulties against teams lower down the table. Now, it receives a parakeet team (39) that, despite sailing 11 points above the burn, has not yet certified its permanence. Against him they will try to sign their fourth consecutive victory at home -after those achieved against Celta (2-0), Cádiz (2-1) and Deportivo Alavés (4-1)-.
For this, Simeone has already confirmed that he will bet on returning ownership to the Argentine Ángel Correa, who will take the place of Antoine Griezmann and will form an attacking duo with the Portuguese Joao Félix, who does not rest. Sime Vrsaljko will also return to the eleven, while Héctor Herrera and José María Giménez are still out.
Opposite, Espanyol, in the middle of the table, is eager to seal its mathematical permanence as soon as possible to confirm itself among the greats in the season of its return to the highest category of Spanish football. With 39 points, the Catalan team has one last effort left to clear up any unknowns.
The victory against Celta (1-0) has encouraged them to face the last games, in which they aspire to little but in which they do not give up giving a new surprise, like the one they experienced during Real Madrid’s visit to Cornellà -El Prat (2-1).
They already caused problems in the first round for the ‘Cholo’ team, which suffered to win the RCDE Stadium (1-2), and they know what it means to win at the Metropolitano, which they stormed in the final stretch of the 2017 season- 18 (0-2), and that’s what they hope to grab this Sunday.
The blue and white coach, Vicente Moreno, faces the appointment in the Spanish capital with the only absence of Yangel Herrera, who will have to complete a cycle of warnings.
