MADRID, Feb. 14 (.) –
The defense ministers of Ukraine and Belarus, Oleksiy Reznikov and Viktor Khrenin, respectively, held a “positive” telephone conversation on Monday with a view to “avoiding the escalation” of tensions around the Ukrainian border.
As reported by Reznikov through his account on the social network Twitter, both have discussed “current issues” and have guaranteed to “interact” more. “I see this as a positive sign and the first step towards cooperation,” he said.
The call has come amid tension over the build-up of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine and when Belarus hosts joint maneuvers with Russia on the country’s western and southern borders.
In this sense, the spokesman of the Kremlin, Dimitri Peskov, has pointed this Monday to the possibility that the Russian and Belarusian presidents, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, will meet this week.
“Yes, this meeting is being prepared, we hope it will take place before the end of the week,” Peskov said at a press conference, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik.
