The new Spanish supercomputer is already in the oven. The plan is for the MareNostrum 5 to be launched for the first time in July of this year, almost 20 years after the installation of the first MareNostrum, which became the fourth fastest in the world in 2004. The difference between the two gives an idea of the incredible leap in computing in these two decades: the new supercomputer will be 7,500 times more powerful than its first predecessor. Also 30 times faster than the MareNostrum 4, which has reached the end of its useful life after six years supporting Spanish and European researchers in their calculations on new medicines, climate studies, astrophysics, the fight against cancer, biomechanics, geophysics and a long list of scientific disciplines.
