The former Vice President of the Government Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría has assured in Tudela (Navarra) that the “economic powers” ask her to return to politics. The leader of the PP during the Government of Mariano Rajoy has affirmed that she “has returned to the idea of strong politicians, of strong men, some true autocrats”. According to Saenz de Santamariatoday “hover over the idea that we need a strong man and there the figure of the autocrat and the demagogue is blurred”.
Away from politics and current member of the Council of State, the former Vice President of the Government has participated this weekend in the congress The Good Life and Pleasureorganized by Cadena Ser in Tudela, where he confessed: “The economic powers tell me: ‘You have to go back’. And I answer them: ‘And you? Would you come with me?'”.
Accompanied by Philosophy professor Amelia Valcárcel, Sáenz de Santamaría commented that in politics “you lose anonymity, which is a pleasure, and also daily life, which is another pleasure”, although later “I have rediscovered doing ordinary things”. In her intervention, collected by Cadena Ser, she criticized the “new policy” and some “less prepared” deputies.
“I have seen many politicians hooked on seeing themselves in the media, even if they went wrong,” explained Sáenz de Santamaría. “That need to see yourself on paper, to be, to feel in the thick of something. It’s very dangerous that seduction. Politics is an easy way to be popular, to be known, it’s terrifying.”
In his opinion, “the economic recession generated a tremendous institutional deterioration that has given rise to demagogues and populists,” for which he considered that today “democracy is in decline.”
