MADRID, 18 Jan. (Portaltic/EP) –

The global smartphone shipments they were down 17 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022 from a year earlier, the worst in a decade, forcing sellers to look cautiously into the new year.

The last quarter of 2022 represents the worst performance both in annual and quarterly terms in a decade in the ‘smartphone’ market, which contrasts with the same period of the previous year, in which there was an increase in demand that accompanied the recovery of the flow of supplies, affected because of the pandemic.

Global shipments for all of 2022 fell 11 percent, while in year-on-year terms this decline reaches 17 percent in the fourth quarter, according to data from the analysis firm Canalys.

Apple is positioned as the first seller, achieving a 25 percent market share in the fourth quarter, followed by Samsung (20%), Xiaomi (11%), Oppo (10%) and vivo (8%). However, if you look at the full year, Samsung stands out as the main brand of ‘smartphones’, with a 22 percent share compared to 19 percent for Appple or 13 percent for Xiaomi.

Canalys analysts point out that sellers will be cautious in 2023, which will lead them to prioritize profitability and defend their market share. Market conditions will remain difficult, so they forecast “flat to marginal” growth.
