Satyajit Ray was born in Calcutta exactly 101 years ago. Studied Economics at Presidency College. Rabindranath Tagore, who was close to his family, went to Santiniketan in 1940-41 to study painting when he was still alive. His interest in movies and gramophone records did not allow him to stay in Santiniketan for long. Returned to Calcutta in 1942. From 1943 he worked for a long time in a British advertising company. After that came the movies. Satyajit Ray’s grandfather Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury was a good writer. Even the philosopher. His son Sukumar, Satyajit’s father, was a pioneer of nonsense poetry in Bengali. Sukumar died when Satyajit Ray was three years old. With that, Amma Suprabha worked very hard to raise Roy. At his mother’s urging, he went to Visva-Bharati in Santiniketan.

In 1928, Roy decided to make a film based on the novel Pather Panchali by Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay. The script was written. He had earlier played a leading role in founding the Calcutta Film Society. The famous French director who came to Calcutta in 1949, along with Jఁn Renwer, was hungry for new age cinema. Satyajit Ray was influenced by the neo-realist film Bicycle Thieves, directed by Italian director Vittorio D’Sica. All this has increased the interest in the film. Patherpanchali was screened in 1955. Roy made a name for himself abroad with his first film. After that, movies were made once a year. All of them became known as classics. Have become world famous.

Stories taken from some Bengali literature. Others are self-written. Roy also screened the story of Premchand. Not only serious movies .. movies were also made for children. They had a delicate sense of humor and irony. Before the advent of computer fonts, Roy introduced new styles in the Bengali alphabet. Annamata like our Bapu font! Wrote many stories. Also wrote novels. Lots of articles written. Satyajit also wrote science fiction and detective stories. It lit up the film industry for four decades.
