Rodríguez Fraga, 35 years as mayor of one of the most touristic municipalities in the Canary Islands

Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga He has spent half his life in politics. The current president of Socialist Party in the Canary Islands has combined his positions in training with 35 years in the Mayor of Adeje. This municipality, located in the south of Tenerife, is known for its beaches, sun and hotel accommodations. It is the town where the most tourist complexes are offered in Tenerife, as well as one of the first holiday destinations that opted for brick when the archipelago began to live off tourism.

Fraga is known in the archipelago for its commitment to tourism. Also for being one of the visible faces of the PSOE in the Canary Islands. So much so that in November 2021 he became president of the Alliance of Tourist Municipalities of Spain. In his inauguration speech, the mayor of Adeje reaffirmed his staunch defense of the services sector: “We all need to generate a strategic plan for tourism that is a generator and distributor of wealth.”

Precisely its constant bid for tourism has led the Canarian population to mobilize against a new construction on the coast of Adeje, andl port of
Armenime.
For the Tenerife Association of Friends of Naturethis space is “the last traditional coastal nucleus in the southwest of Tenerife“and now it is threatened by a luxury construction that intends to privatize a 10,000-square-meter plot of beach, according to environmental groups on the islands.

But this has not been the only mess in which the mayor of Adejero has appeared. In 2017, the local press denounced the appointment by finger of his sister, Carmen Nieves Rodríguez Fraga, as advisor to the Mayor’s Office of the municipality. Besides, his nephew Daniel Melo Rodríguez is one of the councilors of the government team and manages the area of Innovation, Attention to the Citizen and Transparency of the City Council of which Fraga is mayor.

At the age of 28, he became Professor of Philosophy at the University of La Laguna (ULL) and worked as a professor in different centers on the island for the next four years. But his career in politics began early. In 1981, he joined the Canary Socialist Party-Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSC-PSOE) and ran as head of the list in the municipal elections of 1983.

In 1987 he was elected mayor of Adeje for the first time

In addition, it did not take long to reach the Mayor’s Office. In 1987 he was elected leader of Adeje for the first time. That year the PSOE fought against Independent Tenerife Association (ATI)the ancestors of Canarian Coalition (CC). After beating ATI by 176 votes, no other political group has held that chair again. The PSOE of Adeje has won the last nine municipal elections by an absolute majority held in the last 35 years.

At the same time, Rodríguez Fraga’s relationship with the Canarian PSOE is very
close
. In addition to being president of the Executive Commission of the PSOE in the Canary Islands, he has been the general secretary of the party in Adeje for more than 40 years. He only interrupted this position for four years to be spokesman for the group on the island between 2004 and 2008, when he was promoted to general secretary of the PSOE in Tenerife. At the end of that legislature he returned to his position as spokesman for the party in Adeje where he remains to this day.

Your relationship with CajaCanarias and Banca Cívica

Between 2009 and 2010, he became the vice president of CajaCanarias

Outside of politics, Rodríguez Fraga has also flirted with the private sector. In 2008, Fraga did not renew as a PSOE representative from Tenerife and opted for the path of private companies, forming part of a regional banking entity. Between 2009 and 2010, he became the vice president of the General Savings Bank of the Canary Islands, popularly known as CajaCanarias. In this entity he served as vice president of the Board of Trustees of the Canarian Foundation for Business Training and Development (Fyde-CajaCanarias).

In June 2010, CajaCanarias, Caja Navarra and Caja Burgos signed the constitution of Banca Cívica. Two months earlier, in March of the same year, Rodríguez Fraga became a representative of CajaCanarias on the Board of Directors of Banca Cívica.

After 40 years in politics, Fraga has made Adeje his municipality and the commitment to cement his way of generating wealth. Until now, all the hotels that decorate the coast of the island have gone unnoticed by the citizens. Nevertheless, his latest project will have to deal with the awakening of the population and the mobilizations in defense of the environment and the last piece of virgin beach that remains in the municipality of Tenerife.
