The Minister of Defense, Margaret Robleshe stressed this Saturday, in relation to the wars in Gaza and Ukrainethat Spain is a country “firmly committed” to peace in the world and that “there is no room for silence in the face of violations of the basic principles and rules of the International human right“.
Robles has referred to both conflicts in his speech in the Military Easter ceremony in the Royal Palace of Madrid, presided over by the kings and in which the Princess Eleanor as a cadet at the General Academy of Zaragoza.
“In the face of wars, conflicts and any type of unjust violence, we cannot be indifferent. There is no silence in the face of violations of the basic principles and rules of international humanitarian law, nor of United Nations Charterwherever they occur” remarked the head of Defense in the presence of the head of the Government, Pedro Sanchez.
When referring to the war between Israel and Hamas, Robles has reaffirmed the position of the Spanish executive since the conflict broke out on October 7 after the attack of the Palestinian Islamist group.
“We condemn and will condemn the violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza and we strongly call for an immediate ceasefire permanent”, the minister has proclaimed in the face of a war that has left more than 22,400 dead in this Palestinian territory.
Robles has reaffirmed the position of the Spanish Government two days after Israel announced the return next week of its ambassador to Spain, Rodica Radian-Gordon.
The ambassador was called for consultations on November 30 after Sánchez, on his tour of Middle Eastcensure the “unbearable” number of Gazan civilian victims after the military invasion of Israel and questioned whether the Hebrew State was complying with international law.
Robles has supported the fight for Ukrainian independence
Robles has also praised the contribution of the FAS in emergencies caused by natural disasters.
The Defense Minister has also once again condemned the “illegitimate, unjust and cruel” Russian aggression in Ukraine and has guaranteed that Spain will continue to support Ukrainians in “their fight for independence and sovereignty.”
The search for peace is, in Robles’ opinion, a priority and the commitment of the Armed Forces (FAS) in this task it is “total and absolute” in all places where they are deployed.
Furthermore, the head of Defense has considered it necessary to provide the FAS and the CNI of the best resources, which is why he has defended greater investment in defense to strengthen peace and create jobs by supporting the sector’s industry. “This is how we will continue doing it in 2024,” she guaranteed.
