Ramaphosa denounces that South Africa is suffering from “health apartheid”

MADRID, Dec. 3 (.) –

The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, who has already indicated in recent days his disagreement over the travel bans imposed on the country at the international level, denounced this Thursday that the African nation is suffering a kind of “health apartheid” .

“While we respect the right of all countries to take their measures to protect their population (…) Like South Africa, we firmly oppose any form of health apartheid in the fight against this pandemic,” said the president in the framework of a visit to Ivory Coast.

Thus, Ramaphonsa has urged the countries that have implemented this series of measures to “urgently reconsider their decision” and “lift these restrictions” as they will cause great damage to the economy of the country and of southern Africa as a whole. South African news portal News24.

“Since it was our own African scientists who first detected the omicron variant, it is also a slap in the face of African excellence and expertise,” he lamented.

In this sense, he has reiterated his criticism of the prohibitions, which he considers “regrettable, unfair and unscientific.”

Ramaphosa, immersed in a tour of African nations, is in Yamoussoukro, where he has had a meeting with his Ivorian counterpart, Alassane Ouattara, with whom he has reached a series of agreements on defense and agriculture.

In addition, both leaders have spoken about the need to democratize vaccines so that the world population, including the African population, has access to the doses to fight against the advance of the pandemic.

“Governments and international partners must unite around a global guarantee that ensures that vaccines and treatments are produced at scale and freely and equitably available to all,” Ramaphosa said.
