On Thursday, the Palestinian Presidency condemned the march of Israeli flags in occupied East Jerusalem, considering it a provocative act and an unacceptable escalation.
This came in a press statement issued by presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh, in which he said, “The so-called march of Israeli flags are provocations and unacceptable acts of escalation.”
Abu Rudeineh stressed that “these actions do not give legitimacy to anyone, because the Palestinian people are the owner of the land and the right, and they are the ones who grant legitimacy in Jerusalem, not Israel or America.”
He added, “Jerusalem, with its Islamic and Christian sanctities, is the eternal capital of the State of Palestine, and the Palestinian people are the bearers of legitimacy and historical right to it.”
The Palestinian presidential spokesman held the Israeli government “fully responsible for this escalation and its repercussions,” considering that “it will lead to an explosion of situations.”
And he added, “All the resolutions of international legitimacy, the most important of which is Resolution 2334, declared in an uninterpreted manner that East Jerusalem is an integral part of the State of Palestine occupied in 1967.”
Abu Rudeineh added, “The US administration’s silent stance towards the Israeli attacks encouraged the occupation authorities to persist in their attacks and violations against the Palestinian people.”
He praised “the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their defense of their land and sanctities despite all the measures of the occupation, adhering to their legitimate right to defend their eternal capital, Jerusalem.”
East Jerusalem is witnessing great tension after the Israeli government allowed the “flag march”, in which members of the government and the Knesset participated, to pass through Damascus Gate and the Muslim Quarter in the Old City, amid offensive and hostile chants against Palestinians and Arabs.
Settlers in the Old City and at the Damascus Gate organized dances while waving Israeli flags, and carried out attacks on Palestinians, according to eyewitnesses to Anadolu Agency.
Earlier Thursday, hundreds of settlers stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque during the morning session, according to the Islamic Endowments Department in Jerusalem.
Today’s incursions coincide with Israel’s celebration of the 56th anniversary of its occupation of East Jerusalem, according to the Hebrew calendar.
The Palestinians adhere to East Jerusalem as the capital of their state, based on the resolutions of international legitimacy, which do not recognize Israel’s occupation of the city in 1967, nor its annexation to it in 1981.
