On the third day of Eid.. Israeli obstacles in front of the Palestinians in Jericho

Ramallah / Awad Rajoub / Anatolia

On Sunday, the Israeli army tightened its military measures around the city of Jericho, in the central West Bank, and set up military checkpoints at its entrances, impeding the movement of Palestinians leaving and arriving there on the third day of Eid al-Fitr.

Palestine TV (governmental) said, “The occupation obstructs the movement of citizens and continues to close all entrances to Jericho and erect military checkpoints for the second day in a row.”

The television referred to “the arrest of a Palestinian youth at the southern checkpoint of the city.”

Activists on social networks published pictures and videos of queues of cars on both sides of the military checkpoints, and others of Palestinians preparing meals for the stranded.

The city of Jericho witnesses an active movement during the holidays, and it is visited by Palestinians from the governorates of the West Bank, Jerusalem and Israel, due to the large number of parks and recreational places.

For his part, an eyewitness told Anadolu Agency that hundreds of cars are standing in lines of hundreds of meters in length because of the Israeli checkpoints at the entrance to the city.

He added that the Israeli army “has been subjecting, since Saturday morning, those leaving the city to inspection and checking their identity cards, and to a lesser extent those entering the city, which has caused huge congestion.”

Until 14:35 (GMT), the Israeli authorities did not issue a comment on obstructing movement in the city of Jericho.

On the other hand, the official Palestinian News Agency said that two young men were injured during an attempt to repel an attack by Israeli settlers on the town of Deir Dibwan, east of Ramallah (center).

The agency added that “settlers raided the Sheikh Ammar area in the town under the protection of the Israeli occupation army, and the young men confronted them, which led to the injury of two young men in the head and face.”

According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Israeli settlers carried out 160 attacks on Palestinians and their property from the beginning of this year until late March.
