Olivia Smart and Adrián Díaz achieve a historic Olympic diploma in ice dance

MADRID, Feb. 14 (.) –

The Spanish skaters Olivia Smart and Adrián Díaz finished this Monday in eighth position in the ice dance free program of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, a result that allows them to close their participation in the Chinese event with a historic Olympic diploma .

The Catalan and the one from Sheffield, in their first Games as a couple, improved from the ninth position with which they reached the final after the short program and shone on the track at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing.

Their perfect execution under the soundtrack of ‘The mask of Zorro’ was valued by the judges with 121.41 points -a Spanish record in free dance-, which added to the 77.70 of last Saturday’s rhythmic dance gave them a total score of 199.11 , also a record for Spain.

With this, the Spanish duo finished eighth and guaranteed the Olympic diploma, the best Spanish classification in the ice dance modality in an Olympic Games, surpassing the twelfth place of Sara Hurtado and Kiril Jalyavin in PyeongChang 2018.

“We have achieved our two objectives for today: to reach 120 points in the free dance and to overcome the pending position until the Olympic diploma, which was the only pressure we had put on ourselves,” said Díaz. “We came to Beijing to enjoy ourselves, but the possibility of being in the ‘Top 8’ haunted us throughout the week,” he acknowledged.

“We had to skate very well and without fail because the level is very high. If we hadn’t achieved it we would have left a little sad. We were quite nervous just before leaving, but we told ourselves “it’s just another program” and once the music starts is to do what we have been doing every day,” he continued.

The next big challenge for the couple will be the Figure Skating World Championships in Montpellier (France), which will be held between March 21 and 28. “We are going to make one last effort for the Montpellier World Cup, where we hope to obtain the same place or better than here and overcome the 80 points of rhythmic dance and the 200 total points that we were not able to add in Beijing”, he concluded.
