Nearly 90% of ransomware victim companies would pay the ransom if attacked again

MADRID, May 13. (Portaltic/EP) –

The managers perceive paying ransomware ransom as a reliable way to deal with the problem, to the point that nearly 90 percent of the companies that are victims of this cyberattack would pay if they were attacked again.

Cybersecurity company Kaspersky has surveyed 900 business executives from around the world about their attitude to the threat of ransomware, malicious software that encrypts data and equipment and demands payment in return.

Ransomware is still a major threat, as two-thirds (64%) of businesses have been victims of an attack. According to the report, if an organization has been a victim of ransomware in the past, they are more likely to pay a ransom in the event of a new attack (88%).

These companies also are more likely to pay as soon as possible to get immediate access to their data (33% of previously attacked companies vs. 15% of never-victimized businesses), or to pay after just a couple of days of unsuccessful decryption attempts (30% vs. 19%).

“What it’s about business continuityexecutives are forced to make difficult decisions about paying the ransom,” said Kaspersky’s vice president of corporate product marketing, Sergey Martsynkyan, in a statement.

The report also states that 66 percent of companies expect this attack to occur at some point in your business, considering most likely than other common types of attacks, such as denial of service (DDoS), supply chain, advanced persistent threat (APT), crypto mining, or cyber espionage.

However, pay criminals “does not guarantee the return of encrypted data and encourage these cybercriminals to do it again,” says Martsynkyan.
