Deportivo Alavés announced on Monday the dismissal as coach of José Luis Mendilibar because his arrival last December did not have “the expected result” and he is looking for a revulsive to fight for permanence in LaLiga Santander.

“Deportivo Alavés and José Luis Mendilibar have reached an agreement to terminate the Zaldibar coach’s contract as coach of the Albiazul team,” the Vitorian team said in a statement on its website.

Mendilibar came to the ‘babazorro’ bench at the end of 2021 as a replacement for the dismissed Javi Calleja “with the aim of taking flight from a team that was already in relegation places”. “Despite the effort of the coach and the squad, the result has not been as expected and in the twelve games that the Biscayan coach has led Deportivo Alavés, only one victory has been achieved and the team is now six points behind the salvation,” added the club.

“Deportivo Alavés’ duty is to do everything possible to achieve the goal of permanence and, therefore, make this always difficult decision with the conviction that salvation is possible.
The club appreciates the effort and dedication of José Luis Mendilibar.
Thanks for your work, ‘Mendi’, and good luck in the future,” he said.

Mendilibar has only been able to achieve one victory, against Valencia (2-1) in Mendizorrotza on February 13, and in total he has only been able to add seven of the 36 points played by the team from Vitoria, which has led him to fall to Bottom position, tied on 22 points with Levante and six with Cádiz, which marks salvation.

The one from Zaldibar becomes the tenth coach dismissed in LaLiga Santander after the aforementioned Javi Calleja, Ronald Koeman (FC Barcelona), Míchel (Getafe), Paco López and Javi Pereira (Levante), Fran Escribá (Elche), Robert Moreno (Granada ), Álvaro Cervera (Cádiz) and Luis García Plaza (Majorca).
