In a PS2 promotional interview, Mani Ratnam openly expressed his fondness for the ‘Baahubali’ series of films. Responding to the comparison with Baahubali.. ‘We have been very clear about this matter. Only Rajamouli can make ‘Baahubali’ movie. When we started PS we wanted to not do it like Baahubali. Because there is liberty in the story of Baahubali. They are all fictional characters. Think of superheroes. Everything is speculative. But ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is based on the novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. Arulmooli Varman and Aditya Karikalan are real people. That’s why I wanted to show it realistically’, he said.
Mani Ratnam explained more about the same.. ‘I am happy if I can say that the war scenes are not like Baahubali. Because instead of showing the war from the outside (in camera angle) like in Baahubali, we wanted to show the war inside. If it is shown from outside, it will look digital and it will be known to be fake. Whereas.. this shows the difference between Mani Ratnam and Rajamouli’s vision.

AR Rahman has given the music for this prestigious project and Ravi Varman has worked as the cinematographer. While A Srikar Prasad handled the editing duties, the script was written by Kumaravel along with Mani Ratnam. While PS2 is one of the biggest films released this year from Kollywood, trade sources predict that the second part will cross the collections of the first part.
