Labor summons employers and unions to a new meeting to discuss the rise in the minimum wage

The Ministry of Labor and Social Economy has summoned the unions and employers next Tuesday to talk about the rise in the Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI) for this year. The second vice president of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, seeks to bring the SMI closer to 1,080 gross euros per month because she considers that its increase “is the most effective measure to get out of the crisis.” She believes that it also serves to “compensate for the loss of purchasing power” suffered by families.

However, the first vice president, Nadia Calviño, wants to get an increase agreed between unions and employers. For Calviño, “we must not only think about the SMI, but about raising all salaries.” She has once again requested an income agreement within the scope of collective agreements, a negotiation that she continues to block.

The Government raised a rise in the SMI between 1,046 euros and 1,082 euros gross per month in 14 payments for this year at the meeting on December 21. CCOO look for the upper part of the interval with the possibility of extending it to 1,100 euros, which is what it proposes UGT.

It is still difficult to reach a social agreement to achieve a rise in the minimum wage, as the unions have announced that they will not support an increase below the highest figure proposed by the Ministry of Labor and businessmen do not want to exceed 1,040 euros. In any case, the decision on the SMI ultimately belongs to the Government, which already assured at the end of 2022 that the increase will be applied retroactively from January 1. Furthermore, the Executive He also stated that a review of this income will be carried out in the middle of the year based on the behavior of inflation.
