MADRID, 4 (.)
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has failed for the fifth time in his attempt to be the new speaker of the United States House of Representatives in a fourth ballot blocked by a group of Republicans who have refused to support him.
The Republican candidate has obtained 201 votes in the fifth ballot, exactly the same support as in the fourth round held hours before. As in the previous count, 20 Republicans have voted for the Republican candidate Byron Donalds, while the Democratic candidate Hakeem Jeffries has garnered 212 votes.
In the fourth and fifth ballots, the Republican representative Victoria Spartz has abstained while the discontent against McCarthy grows, since many congressmen consider that she should step aside to unblock the situation, as reported by CNN.
With very little room for error, McCarthy, who was hoping to assert the small Republican majority in the House of Representatives given the 222 seats the party won in the midterm elections, has already failed in three previous rounds for the malaise of a more radical sector united in the Caucus of Freedom.
This shows the marked differences between the various factions of the Republican party, which will surely end up in similar situations when it has to negotiate with the Senate, which is in the hands of the Democrats.
