Gazmuri, a member of the Socialist Party, was a senator for 20 years and Chile’s ambassador to Brazil during the second term of former President Michelle Bachelet (2014-2018), explained the Chilean Foreign Ministry in a statement.

He was also director of Televisión Nacional de Chile in 2019 and “has extensive professional experience as a consultant to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Organization of American States (OAS)” the ministry added.

Gazmuri’s mission is to restore relations between the two countries, which continue to deteriorate since the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, continues to be highly critical of the government of Nicolás Maduro.

Maduro, for his part, describes Boric as a “cowardly left” and has criticized his government several times, in which the center-left coexists with the coalition made up of the Broad Front and the Communist Party.
