The Italian authorities have reported this Saturday 28,064 new coronavirus infections and 123 deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Civil Protection bulletin and the Ministry of Health.

The rate of positives is 4 percent, while 7,576 hospitalized have been counted, 56 more than on Friday. Up to 953 patients are admitted to intensive care units after adding 95 new ones in 24 hours. In total, Italy accumulates 5.3 million infections and 135,544 confirmed coronavirus deaths.

Meanwhile, 84 new cases of the omicron variant have been found, a figure significantly higher than the 55 on Friday. “Most of the new cases came from Lombardy (33) and Campania (20)”, has indicated the Higher Institute of Health (ISS).

“The presence of omicron was expected, in line with what has also been observed in other countries and the cases are likely to increase in the coming days,” explained the president of the ISS, Silvio Brusaferro.
