The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed this Friday afternoon that the suspicious envelope detected in the Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid contained a crushed animal eye, thus keeping similarity with other packages received in embassies of this country invaded by Russia. In addition, it has ruled out the existence of any explosive or explosive substance, as well as a mechanism for its activation.
Members of the National Police have analyzed the suspicious package received this Friday at the Ukrainian legation, the second detected in a week after the one who slightly injured an employee on Wednesday after opening a letter.
Sources from the Ministry of the Interior previously reported that, after 2:00 p.m. this Friday, the embassy’s security filter detected a suspicious shipment, after which the members of the National Police who were on security duties abroad the embassy have immediately evacuated the building. Before the information from the Interior, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Oleg Nikolenko, had assured Ukrinform that the package is similar to those received in the last few hours by embassies and consulates in several European countries.
The inspection of the package has been negative for explosives, but the members of the National Police carried out a “more exhaustive” analysis to determine if it contains traces of blood, in line with other packages received at Ukrainian embassies in other countries.
The same sources indicate that the fact that the shipping postage is not Spanish, together with its characteristics, could relate it to shipments that have been intercepted at other Ukrainian embassies and consular offices in different European countries.
SECOND SENDING TO THE EMBASSY
This is the same official headquarters that already received another package with pyrotechnic material last Wednesday, slightly injuring an employee of the legation when he went to open it.
Interior had so far confirmed another six packages with pyrotechnic material with a mechanism that causes a “deflagration by sudden flame” when opened. The first of them was sent on November 24 to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. The National Court has assumed the investigation.
In parallel, and before the new envelope was released at its embassy in Spain, the Ukrainian government has indicated that in recent days “bloody packages” with animal eyes have arrived at the country’s embassies in Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia and Italy, and that suspicious shipments have also been registered in consulates of the country in Poland, the Czech Republic and Italy.
“The packages themselves were wet with a liquid with a characteristic odor and had a certain stench. We are studying the meaning of these messages,” Oleg Nikolenko, spokesman for the ministry, said in a statement.
