The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, met this Tuesday with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and visited a reception center as part of his trip to the country to thank Chisinau for its firm support in hosting almost half a million Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.
“The Republic of Moldova, which is already a fragile country, is by far the country that has received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees, as a proportion of its own population,” said its deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, who reported that the Secretary General has expressed “the UN’s commitment to increase assistance to the Moldovan authorities”.
Guterres visited a reception center in the country on Tuesday and also visited a Moldovan family that has allowed Ukrainians to stay in their home in the face of the refugee crisis that has been unleashed in the country due to Russia’s actions.

Guterres also met on Monday with the Prime Minister of Moldova, Natalia Gavrilita. After the meeting, he assured that 90,000 Ukrainians was “a high number for a country with a stable population of 2.6 million people.”
He also conveyed his deep concern “for the continuation and possible extension of the war in Ukraine, and for the impact it is having not only in the region but throughout the world,” Farhan Haq told a press conference.
