Foreign Affairs assures that “it will always keep all channels of dialogue open” with the Polisario Front

MADRID, 10 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation assures that “it will always keep open all channels of dialogue” with the Polisario Front, sources from this Department inform Europa Press.

The Ministry led by José Manuel Albares reacts in this way after the Polisario Front announced this Saturday its decision to suspend contacts with the current Spanish Government after showing its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

These same sources assure that the Ministry has learned of the news through the media, underlining that “Spain considers that dialogue is the best way to address differences and will always keep all channels of dialogue open”.

For its part, the General Secretariat of the Polisario has explained in a statement that “in view of the concrete steps” that the Government of Pedro Sánchez has taken, they have decided to suspend contacts with the Spanish Executive to distance themselves “from using the Saharawi issue “.

“The Polisario Front decides to suspend its contacts with the current Spanish Government (…) within the framework of miserable dealings with the occupier, and until it adheres to the resolutions of international legitimacy that recognize the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and respect the borders of their country as they are internationally recognized”, the Polisario has detailed.

The Polisario has assured in the letter that Spain “has responsibilities” towards the Saharawi people and before the United Nations, since “it is the administering power” of the region, and that its responsibilities persist.

They also thanked the Spanish Congress of Deputies and the “broad and transversal movement of solidarity” with their cause, for “so strongly” urging the Spanish Government on the “need to return to the path of international legality”.
