The United Nations commemorates in its corridors in New York City, on Monday, the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba in 1948 for the first time in its history, in the presence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People said in a statement on its website that it was commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Nakba “with the assistance of the Division for Palestinian Rights in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.”

It stated that “for the first time in the history of the United Nations, the occasion is commemorated in accordance with the mandate given by the United Nations General Assembly on November 30, 2022.”

On November 30, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 4 resolutions in favor of Palestine, including a resolution requesting the Division for Palestinian Rights of the General Secretariat to devote its activities in 2023 to the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, including a high-level event in the General Assembly Hall on May 15 ( May) 2023.

“The mass exodus of Palestinians known as the Nakba saw more than half of the Palestinian population become refugees,” the committee said.

She added, “This anniversary sheds light on the world’s longest and escalating refugee crisis, and is a reminder that more than 5,900,000 Palestine refugees registered with UNRWA are still living amidst conflict, violence and occupation, and are looking forward to a just and lasting solution to their plight.”

She indicated that this memory will be celebrated by organizing two events at the United Nations headquarters, jointly organized by the Committee and the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations.

They are: a special high-level meeting that includes speeches, including a speech by the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, and a special commemorative event and a concert in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, according to the statement.

According to the UN committee, all UN members and observers were invited to attend the two events, in addition to intergovernmental and civil society organizations, as well as the public.

In 1975, the General Assembly established the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which is renewed annually.

The term “Nakba” is applied to the process of displacing the Palestinians from their lands in 1948 by “armed Zionist gangs”, which is the year that witnessed the founding of Israel, and the Palestinians commemorate the anniversary with various activities on May 15 of each year.

According to a statement issued by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, published on Sunday, the number of Palestinians has increased about ten times since the Nakba in 1948, and today it is estimated at about 14,300,000, including about 6,400,000 refugees.
