Follow the horn and the weed appeared on the Río Negro coast

The coast of the province of Río Negro gives us one wonder after another, from Las Grutas to San Antonio Este. An incredible beauty, with cliffs and sectors that are ideal for practicing sport fishing. A true paradise for silverside fishing fans, especially those who are attracted to the horn, manila or yellow tail, a species that abounds in this region.
Las Grutas is part of the municipality of San Antonio Oeste, located 15 kilometers from there, and has around 17,000 inhabitants. This spa was strengthened from the authorization, a few kilometers from there, of the Port San Antonio East in 1983. Sea products and their subsequent marketing, in addition to the hectic activity of the port, became the basis of their economic life. The Municipal Ejido of San Antonio covers three nuclei: San Antonio Oeste, Puerto de San Antonio Este and Las Grutas. These points make up a tourist circuit of excellence, with many tourist and fishing benefits.

Regarding fishing, at the beginning of the season we commented on the irruption of the horn, in good quantity, as is almost a custom in this region. Jorge Duran, a benchmark in the area and owner of a trade in the industry in the town called Costa Pirata, told us that they are usually small specimens, but the abundance is remarkable. Now, now averaging the month of August, the presence of manila remains, with a temperature that remains low and keeps the water cold.

There is days when fishing is better than others, it all depends on the wind. If it blows very strong from the Southeast, the waves become high, the sea is rough and the coasts are filled with dirt, making fishing activity difficult. On the other hand, with a northwesterly or west wind, the sea flattens out and fishing is much better, with the proviso that it should not be extremely flattened, something that can happen often in this area, since a lot of small silverside approaches in these conditions, cornalito and the results are not ideal. In summary, a little swell, without excesses and, preferably from the Southeast, the best for this area.

Jorge told us that they are beginning to emerge the first weeds, better known by the locals as blanquitos. This usually always occurs as spring approaches, making a combo of two very captivating species. For these species, the bait they use the most is shrimp or prawn, it is peeled and cut to the size of a hook. Usually they tend to color it yellow, with the addition of some flavoring, generally with bonito fish oil or another. Fishing is done, in this region, in places that are key. In the vicinity of Las Grutas, La Rinconada, the first descent, the fifth, the bottle house and the basement stand out. Meanwhile, near San Antonio Este, La Lobería as La Conchilla beach and La Alcantarilla, are exceptional fishing grounds. The latter, 60 km away, is a rugged setting and a great destination to visit.

Lastly, mention that another species to take advantage of in the area is the bassin stone areas it is doing well, always looking for a bit of rough sea, ideal for this combative species.

Rio Negro has it all. we just have to discover it if we haven’t. And what better than to think about the events that will soon take place, among them, the proposal ofl 9/3, a new edition of the National Silverside Festival, six-hour event at La Conchilla beach. Las Grutas, without a doubt, will be one of those places that we will not forget, neither for its people, nor for its beauty, much less, for its fishing.
