Equality installs the first control bracelets for sexual offenders released by the ‘only yes is yes’ law

The Ministry of Equality has installed the first control bracelets for released sexual offenders. This measure is due to the entry into force of the ‘only yes is yes’ law, on October 7, to fight against sexist violence. The delegate of Government Against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosellexplained that this measure seeks to “close the protection gap that existed between one type of violence and another.”

For this, the women, in addition to receiving the help of a control instrument for their aggressors, “will receive more attention psychological, legal, socialand more repair, and they will suffer less re-victimization within the process”. Thus they will be “safer before, during and after the process”.

Rosell has also highlighted other aspects of the law that point in the same direction, such as the fourth final provision. This provision is amended by article 36 of the Penal Code with the aim of preventing the aggressor’s access to the third degree of prison (this degree grants greater freedom to the prisoner) until he has completed half of his sentence. The inmate will also not be able to access the third degree if there is no report that guarantees that he has taken advantage of the treatment program for convicted sexual assault offenders. According to the delegate, this point “delays the release.”

Last Tuesday, Equality announced that in December it had given instructions to the center that manages alerts, to the prosecution and to General Council of the Judiciary. She did it to assist women who request control devices for their attackers when their prison sentences are cut by law within 24 hours.
