MADRID, July 10 (.) –
The Spaniards Diego Botín and Florian Trittel were proclaimed champions of Europe this Sunday in the 49er Olympic sailing category, after less than a year as a team, while the Spanish Támara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló were fourth in Europe after finishing third in the ‘medal race’ of the 49er FX.
Botín and Trittel achieved their first gold in less than a year together in Aarhus (Denmark), in an event that was played in an open format with the best teams in the world. With the first regatta of the day, the Cantabrian-Catalan team added a 12 that placed them second, just three points behind gold in the hands of the Dutch Lambreix and Van de Werken.
The Spanish won the last round of the final phase, which put them at the top of the standings with an eleven-point advantage over the runners-up before the start of the regatta for the medals. The ‘medal race’ kept Botín and Trittel among the first in the fleet, with the Dutch team always behind.
“European Champions, it was a bit unexpected. The objective was obviously to be at the top and we have achieved it. It gives us a lot of confidence to continue on this path and confirms that we are on the right track. Thanks to everyone who He has supported us from home and here in Aarhus. We are very happy,” Trittel said in statements provided by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation.
In 49er FX, Támara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló took advantage of the first heat of the last day to enter the ‘medal race’ positions as seventh in the general classification and fifth in Europe. In the second round they climbed one more step and, in the fight for the medals, they sought bronze against the Italians Germani and Bertuzzi.
