MADRID, Sep. 2 (.) –
The English Chelsea confirmed in the early hours of this Friday that it has terminated its contract with the Spanish defender Marcos Alonso, who is free so, despite the closing of the summer transfer market, he could sign for FC Barcelona.
“Marcos Alonso has left Chelsea FC by mutual consent, ending a six-year relationship with the club in which he lifted many trophies and provided the Blues fans with memorable goals. Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marcos for his services and wish him all the best for the rest of his career,” the London club said in a statement on its website.
This termination allows the Spanish international to be free and that he can still sign for another team since it is allowed by current regulations. His destination should be FC Barcelona, who would hire him for their left back, one of the positions that Xavi Hernández wanted to strengthen.
Alonso, 31, landed at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2016 from Italian Fiorentina and will now have his first experience in the Spanish League, after having been in the Real Madrid academy, from which he moved to Bolton.
The player from Madrid leaves Chelsea with whom he has won a Premier League, the 2021 Champions League, the FA Cup, the Europa League, the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup. In total, he has played 212 games for the ‘blues’, scoring 29 goals and dishing out 23 assists.
