Cape Americas – Canada will compensate Indigenous communities, a historic agreement

Published on :

2.8 billion Canadian dollars: this is the sum that Canada will pay to 325 indigenous communities to repair the damage suffered for a century by thousands of children forcibly interned in religious boarding schools, between the end of the 19th century and the 1990s. Some 150,000 children were thus taken from their families, cut off from their language and culture. They also suffered numerous abuses, with thousands never coming back. In recent years, many children’s graves have been discovered near these former boarding schools. We talk about it with Marie-Pierre Bousquet, director of the Native studies program at the Université de Montréal.
