Canada opens investigation after submersible crash near Titanic

Canada announced Saturday to investigate after the accident of the submersible Titan, which disappeared near the wreck of the Titanic. The US Coast Guard said last Thursday that all five people on board died in the “catastrophic implosion” of the craft.

Canadian authorities began Saturday, June 24, to investigate the accident of the Titan, this private submersible disappeared near the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic with five people on board.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) “has begun the safety investigation (…) into the fatal event involving the vessel Polar Prince”, the Canadian vessel from which the small submersible of tourism, its president Kathy Fox announced on Saturday.

Such an investigation usually takes between 18 and 24 months, but the TSB will try “to go faster, because we know that everyone wants answers, especially families,” she said.

A TSB team has arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and is “examining the occurrence site and wreckage, interviewing witnesses and gathering all relevant information,” she added.

A second investigation opened by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The TSB is the agency responsible for investigating air, rail and marine accidents with the aim of improving transportation safety. It does not comment on any civil or criminal liability.

A second, separate investigation was opened by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Investigators have “begun to examine the circumstances that led to the deaths of the five people on board the submersible,” Kent Osmond, a Newfoundland and Labrador RCMP official, said on Saturday.

The latter must make it possible to assess “whether a full investigation by the RCMP is warranted or not”, he indicated, specifying that “such an investigation will only be carried out if our examination of the circumstances indicates that federal criminal laws or provincial laws may have been violated”.

The US Coast Guard announced on Thursday that the five passengers of the Titan – scientific tourism submersible which disappeared in the Atlantic on Sunday – had died in the “catastrophic implosion” of the craft.
