Bukele’s party advances that it would support a new extension to the state of exception

The Salvadoran government did not rule out on Thursday that the authorities expand the measure, imposed to combat the wave of homicides

New Ideas, the party of the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has advanced this Friday that it would support a new extension to the state of emergency, imposed to combat the wave of homicides in the Central American country, after the Government did not rule out on Thursday having to extend the measure.

The head of the New Ideas caucus in the Legislative Assembly, Christian Guevara, has clarified that “there are a few days left” for the previous extension of the measure to conclude, but he has assured that if the Executive requests it, the body “will gladly analyze.” “Our hands are not going to shake with the criminals,” he has guaranteed.

Guevara, according to the Salvadoran newspaper ‘El Mundo’, has emphasized that there will be “neither forgiveness nor forgetting” for the crimes committed by the gangs, which he has branded as “cancer for society.” With one that is free, he starts that metastasis again “, he lamented.

Thus, it has assessed the effectiveness of the state of emergency in the field of arrests, which on Thursday exceeded 28,300, according to data from the Salvadoran authorities.

In parallel, Guevara has criticized the opposition parties, Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) and Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), which have expressed their rejection of arbitrary arrests within the framework of the state of emergency.

“I think the only thing they have done is get in the way, side with the gang members, send them a political message,” he said, before stressing that both formations “are betting that their loyal voters are the families of the gangs, the families of criminals, the families of gang members.

For his part, the deputy of Arena Rodrigo Ávila has considered that, although there have been many arrests, the exceptional regime has been carried out in an “improvised” manner.

The Minister of Justice and Public Security of El Salvador, Gustavo Villatoro, did not rule out on Thursday that the Salvadoran authorities extend the state of emergency again. The Legislative Assembly has already approved a first extension, which will last until May 25.

The Salvadoran government acknowledged on Monday the death of at least eleven people detained under the state of emergency. During this period, the Salvadoran government is empowered to suspend certain freedoms and guarantees to facilitate the deployment of the military and police in the streets and in the municipalities where these homicides occurred.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) or the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have expressed concern about the imposition of a state of emergency in El Salvador, to which Bukele has responded that these organizations “defend gang members.” Meanwhile, the United Nations has also shown concern about the wave of homicides in the Central American country.
