After the assault on Brazilian institutions this Sunday, several congressmen have begun to gather the necessary support to establish a parliamentary commission in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies to investigate the involvement of former President Jair Bolsonaro in these acts.
In the style of the committee in the United States that during the last year investigated the degree of involvement of former President Donald Trump in the assault on the Capitol, the senator of the Union Brasil Soraya Thronicke has already proposed through the pertinent channels the opening of a Parliamentary Commission of Investigation ( CPI).
Thronicke’s proposal, a rival to Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of the elections, has already been supported by other senators such as Humberto Costa, from the Workers’ Party (PT); Randolfe Rodrigues from Red; and Eliziane Gama, from Citizenship, details the newspaper ‘O Globo’.
For his part, PT deputy Rogério Correia has announced on Twitter that he will also carry out a similar proposal within the Chamber. “I am going to propose an ICC of the coup!” He has written on the aforementioned social network.
“Only with Bolsonaro imprisoned will we have peace and democracy. Without rest until this happens. I will permanently express myself in this sense during my term. From now on I promise to request an ICC on these events,” wrote Correia, who will need for this purpose at least 171 supports among the 513 seats in the Chamber.
Faced with these facts, Bolsonaro has disregarded and has denied any type of responsibility in what happened, as they have been denouncing from President Lula’s cabinet. The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, recalled that the former president has led a “conflictive transition” by not recognizing the results of the elections and defending alleged theories of fraud.
Thousands of followers of the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro have stormed this Sunday the headquarters of the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia, after several months of mobilizations and violent protests due to their discontent with the triumph at the polls of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
As a consequence of these attacks, President Lula has decreed the federal intervention of Brasilia to assume security powers, stressing that the “fascist vandals” who caused the chaos will be “persecuted” and “punished.”
