In fact, after more than six years in the Soto del Real prison (Madrid), he has remained since December 27 at the Victoria Kent Social Insertion Center, a space in the center of Madrid where prisoners are serving their sentences in semi-liberty.
Although he was sentenced to 29 years and one month, the Supreme Court later set a maximum of 12 years in prison for the former treasurer, so he has already served most of his sentence behind bars. Barcenas aspires to request parole as of 2024, according to the Prisa newspaper.
Bárcenas was released from prison in January 2015 and re-entered in May 2018, once he was convicted in the first instance by the National Court. Since April 2021, Bárcenas has enjoyed twenty permits without any incident. That fact and his participation in the reinsertion program for corrupt people have been fundamental in now granting Bárcenas semi-freedom. This is the step prior to his subsequent access to the third degree or open regime.
