At least 29 people have died and 35 soldiers have been injured by firearms due to the violence unleashed on Thursday in Sinaloa (Mexico), after the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán (‘El Ratón’). Guzmán is the son of the Mexican drug trafficker ‘El Chapo’ and is wanted for trafficking. The Secretary of Defense (Sedena) arrested him again, during the early hours of this Thursday, in an operation carried out in the city of Culiacán, after the failure of the October 2019 operation when the authorities released him due to the violence that led to his capture. Twenty-one members of organized crime have also been arrested.
Among the 29 deceased, a dozen belong, according to the Secretary of Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandovalat Mexican Armed Forces. The other 19 are part of criminal groups that caused the disturbances. He has added that no civilian lost their lives. The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has remarked that the Government has acted in a “responsible way to care for the civilian population and that there are no innocent victims.”
He has also stated that the Governor of Sinaloa, Ruben Rocha, informed him that the situation in the region is normalizing, after suffering a day of blockades, attacks with bullets and cars set on fire. “There are no armed groups in Sinaloa. Since yesterday they are already removing all the cars that were set on fire and that they used to block the streets, practically throughout the city (from culiacan)”, he detailed.
